Acer Gears Up To Push Notebooks In India

By Preethee Rayen
Bangalore, Jul 15, 2003

Acer India, the manufacturer of Acer PCs, notebooks and TFT monitors who launched its third generation Centrino-based notebook-cum-Tablet PC earlier this month. plans to focus more on notebooks.

S. Rajendran, general manager - sales & marketing, consumer product group, said, "We want to increase the notebook business in India. The entire notebook business in India is hardly 2 percent. In fact, we have been introducing notebooks at sweet price points. In less than a week's time of the Centrino-based Tablet PC's launch, we were able to sell 35 of them, and so far the response has been good."

The Centrino Tablet PC is an ultra-portable notebook that can morph into a tablet PC. The Tablet PC has an Intel Centrino ultra-low voltage processor, with a 512MB memory, 40 GB hard disk. It has an external CD R/W, DVD combo. It has a 10.4 inches LTPS (low temperature poly silicon) screen and an internal modem. It works on windows XP, tablet edition.

"We are focusing more on the notebook business as there is a good potential for notebooks in India. We have reorganized our business into two groups, The Consumer Product Group (CPG) and Enter Product Group (EPG), as it will enable us to focus better on all the segments," said Rajendran.

Acer is relocating its manufacturing unit in Pondicherry by the end of this month. "Unable to meet the current volume business, we are moving to a larger factory in Pondicherry, where we will be able to triple the manufacturing. Currently, we roll out about 3,000 PCs and from next month onwards we should be able to triple it, as the facilities are also better in terms of testing and assembling," said Rajendran.

Acer closed at Rs. 180 crore in the year 2002 and are looking at doing Rs. 240 crore in this fiscal year.

Has India a big market for notebooks?

Ya Indian customer is one of the major buyers of notebooks abraod as they get it cheaper. In fact they buy on their visit in coutries abroad and take it with them as used. Also the market of used is becoming larger and larger in India. OS if the price point is pitched properly they have a real big market and it can be easily doubled or trippled within no time.
