__p The festival of festivals is here and it’s that time of the year when the buyer opens up the wallet and spends unhesitatingly. But where is that money going?
p____p Our in-house research surveys indicate that the money is going into electronic gadgets. Digital cameras, PDAs, MP3 players are the desired items this year. People love new toys and are willing to spend hard-earned savings on a gadget that will give them the cool look’.
p____p What troubled me when I saw the finding was that PC was not rated very high as a desired buy. Yes, in percentage terms a large number of people did say they would buy a PC, but when it came to preference of purchase the PC ranked poorly.
p____p What it meant was that while a family would like to own a PC, if given a choice, they might opt to buy a digicam before buying a PC. This might be because people do not consider owning a PC to be a prestigious purchase anymore. Or, that they don’t see any value in owning one. Now both these thoughts are disconcerting.
p____p The modest PC has not reached a critical mass as yet to be considered an uninteresting buy. The buyer has to be reacquainted about the benefits of the PC. You will have to learn to re-pitch the PC to get the buyer re-interested.
p____p Where earlier the sales line was that the PC would aid educational needs of the child, now the line could be how it expands to meet the growing needs of the client. A microprocessor company has just launched an advertising campaign on these lines.
p____p Today, the PC does a lot of things, in addition to just helping make interesting project papers. If digicams are the hottest products, then the PC can be pitched as platform of storage. If an MP3 player is the pea, the PC is the pod.
p____p It’s all a matter of putting the glamour back into the PC.
