In Hot Pursuit of Pirates

Pursuit

__p While software piracy continues to pose a major menace for most vendors, Microsoft, however, has left no stone unturned in tackling counterfeiters in more than 20 nations around the globe while removing thousands of illegal offerings. Other companies engaged in the aggressive pursuit of software and hardware pirates include Corel, Autodesk and Adobe Systems.

p____p IT hardware, on the other hand, has managed to make a fairly decent breakthrough in this space, but not enough. Despite all efforts to find and prosecute pirates, most vendor representatives acknowledge that criminal counterfeiting is on the rise.

p____p The easiest way to minimize piracy is to set a good example. Since that is a rarity in trade circles, the IACCI (IT Anti-Counterfeit Coalition of India), which tackles counterfeiting issues, seriously looks into the matter of affected vendors. This union of Indian IT hardware companies and industry enforcement organizations plans to engage in an in-depth study to gauge the size of counterfeiting in India.

p____p While there are plans to conduct at least one national workshop every quarter, there is also a need to indulge in comparable, in-depth concentrated training programs for specific verticals such as the police force, attorneys, etc. These training seminars planned by the body will bring the necessary knowledge to the legal authorities to take the right course of action.

p____p More importantly, while regulation bodies continue its tasks, channel empathy in such cases is largely missing. Of course, the lockdown culminating in legal proceedings is certainly not appreciated, and wrath against the principal vendor is usually vent across badly.

p____p The channel would need to understand that it needs to root out unsavoury business practices within the community before it points a finger back at the vendor. p__
