Mumbai: Organizations across the domain are increasingly leveraging the power of cloud computing to bring the highest level of efficiency in their business. However, while moving to the cloud platform, are the enterprises assured about their data protection strategies? Perhaps not 100 percent. According to the latest study by CTERA, many enterprises do not consider the cloud app backup as their key priority.
A survey conducted by Game of Clouds, commissioned by CTERA Networks (Download it here) reveals that enterprises do not consider backup and data protection as their priority area because of the mis-belief that the technology is inherently more resilient than on-premise applications. According to the study, IT decision makers believed that their organization shows less focus on backing up cloud applications.
The study, conducted among 400 IT decision makers and IT specialists in companies leveraging cloud for deploying applications, 66 percent of respondents strongly or somewhat agreed their organization shows “less focus” on backing up cloud applications.
In fact, 62 percent of respondents said they depend on their cloud provider to back up their cloud applications. According to the report, 36 percent of respondents think such a loss would be worse than a datacenter crash, and 14 percent fear losing their job because of the cloud data loss.
Here backup and data protection specialist partners come in a big way who can help organizations define their data protection strategies. Though the backup and data protection is not an unexplored area for partners, the cloud data backup is emerging as an additional revenue generator for partners.
Prashanth G J, CEO at TechnoBind said that data protection and backup is a huge opportunity for channel partners. “Data has grown exponentially over the years and with it the challenges related to managing that data. Cloud is a reality, so customers are looking at adopting cloud with it being the destination for backup and DR streams. All these developments present a huge opportunity for the channel partners in the market specifically in the backup and DR space”, he said.
Data is now residing more and more on mobile devices like Laptops, Mobile devices, etc., which means the probability of loss of data at the end point is much much higher. Loss of data in enterprises to electronics and software crash is rampant when it comes to endpoint data on user computers. According to estimates over 96 percent of data loss incidents are from failure of electronic, operating system and software crash and user behavior. Therefore, server and backup are must for every business.
“Temporary disruption to data access is as significant a handicap as permanent loss of data. Cloud cannot be a standalone solution, but it can be an important component of data loss – data has to be locally available when cloud faces outage. We have seen incidence where AWS Amazon Web Services: Instagram, Netflix, and Pinterest were down over six hours. Hence, data backup is vital for business continuity”, said Kshitij Kotak, Chief Innovator at Grecells Black-box Data Safe. Grecells has come up with an innovative data backup solution black-box is able to recover the data in adverse conditions such as system failure or physical damage.
With the rising adoption of cloud technologies opportunity for channel partners in this area are also set to rise. However, the traditional data backup and recovery partners will first need to gain the expertise of the cloud domain to provide efficient backup and protection services to enterprises.
