New Delhi: Leading e-tailer Amazon claimed it acquired more new customers from tier-2 and tier-3 cities across the country during its four-day ‘Great Indian Sale’ that concluded on Sunday.
“Our customers’ acquisition drive in 2017 saw 235 percent annual growth in tier-2 and tier-3 cities during the four-day sale since May 11,” said the Indian subsidiary of the US-based e-commerce giant in a statement here.
The company, however, did not disclose the number of customers it acquired during the sale and from which cities across the country. Acceleration in customer acquisition, however, saw a whopping 500 percent growth in tier-4 towns like Singrauli, Alwar, Dholpur, Muzaffarnagar and Shivpuri.
“Prime members accounted for 35 percent of the orders and sales on May 11 were the largest on the back of 85 percent growth in the first quarter,” noted the statement. Purchases by paid prime members grew 100 percent over its similar sale in January. In the wireless category, global brands like Apple and Samsung saw 30 times and 16 times sales growth, while BPL’s Exclusive television sets and washing machines grew 24 times.
“We are humbled at the huge response to the sale, which surpassed our expectations in prime member subscriptions, new customer acquisition and in setting new benchmarks,” said Amazon India Vice-President Manish Tiwary in the statement.
New Records:
The sale this year has also set new records within the e-commerce domain. The top two categories were in the consumer electronics segments, with smartphones leading and large appliances close behind. According to the US-based e-commerce firm, a lot of first-time customers have opted to buy smartphones on the platform, says an Economic Times report.
Deals that were exclusive to Amazon Prime members were a big hit on Day 1, with customers lapping up discounts on products like Apple Red and Redmi phones. Wireless gear was also sold within seconds of appearing on the site, claims Tiwary.
“We are excited about the response we have received on our Prime-exclusive deals,” says Tiwari. “We are eager to get Prime members to experience the deals we have to offer over the next two days as well.”
Amazon Prime members get early – and sometimes exclusive – access to deals, with a 30-minute window to cash in on the best discounts before other customers. Prime users also get free one or two-day deliveries and also get 10-per cent off on Amazon Gift Cards until stocks last.
