COMPASS: Empowering Partners With Its Modern Approach

Approximately 23 years ago, in the year 1993, an Assembly of about 12 IT dealers of Kolkata discussed the need of forming an association ofIT dealers who can look after the interests of the members and the Industry as well. In the year 1994, an assembly of 19 IT dealers meet and COMPASS was conceived that day and the lead was been given to K.L Lalani, which was safely delivered on 9th June 1994 and COMPASS got registration under the Company Act. IT entrepreneurs felt it necessary to set up a forum to:

•Exchange ideas and thoughts for a better tomorrow.
•Protect the interests and rights of the members and IT Industry.
•Negotiate with the statutory authorities collectively.
•Encourage and spread IT awareness in Eastern India.

COMPASS has been a facilitator and catalyst by working closely with government on policy issues, enhancing efficiency, competitiveness and expanding business opportunities through assorted services. The association has its headquarters in Kolkata and members are spread all over Eastern India.

Growth and Success of COMPASS
With the rise of IT dealers, the challenges is sure to increase but COMPASS certainly aims to transform challenges into goals. Since its inception in 1994, COMPASS :

-Set up a permanent office at 37 Shakespeare Sarani, Kolkata – 700 017

-Organized the biggest yearly IT exhibition “COMPASS” in Eastern India.

-Negotiated successfully with Government Authorities with respect to Sales

-Exempted tax, excise, customs for the benefit of the members and consumers. Itwas instrumental in bringing down Sales Tax from 13.8 to 4 per cent.

-Launched its website www.compassindia.com in September 2000.

-Formulated the IT Directory of Eastern India in Print and Electronic Media.

-Negotiated with the Govt. of West Bengal for a space where India’s largest IT Plaza with all the commercial and entertainment facilities will be made available.

-Incorporated a Cell to redress the grievances of members and consumers.

– Released the Members’ Directory on a yearly basis since 1995.

-Played a pro-active role in curtailing software piracy in Eastern India with its close association with NASSCOM. Publishing bi-monthly news magazine named COMPAPER in print media and circulating the same to its fellow members and associates. This is yet another achievement where members too can write on any topic of concerned interest and find means to advertise their products through Ad banner in the news magazine.

-Developed fellowship amongst members and their families through annual picnics and social functions.

– Often organised awareness programs on social issues like cancer through committee cricket matches.

-On September 25 2015, hosted the conclave of national IT association body FAIITA in Kolkata -Created an axclusive Camp on professional tax was held on 25th May, 2015 at CTMA office, which wasorganised by CTMA, COMPASS and AIREA, in association with Confederation of West Bengal Trade Associations (CWBTA)

Organized Logitech COMPASS Premier League on 6th and 7th February 2016 at F.D Park, Saltlake Kolkata. It was a joint effort by vendors, associates and partners. 9 teams were a part of the mega IT cricket tournament in India. Quick Heal, Intex, Dell, Lalani InfoTech, Supertron, Savera Marketing, Epson were some of the participating teams for the Cricket League.

Roadmap
Computer Association of Eastern India (COMPASS) has always tried to boost the channel by organising exciting events which eases of business pressure. COMPASS has always aimed to provide their partners a platform to interact and build strong relations day by day. Partners appreciate the initiatives the association takes in their favor that helps them stand as a strong unit and work seamlessly. COMPASS aims to organize more activity in the future to support partners’ interest and empower them with more skill enhancing workshops and involve more SIs and dealers as partners around East India.
