Excerpts:

CT: What triggered you to form distributors association at this junction. Please explain its need and objective?

Pillai: Distributors as a genre are a unique commodity and are in a position to see both sides of the coin. We thought it prudent to utilize this unique feature to band together to create a platform which could speak in one voice for the betterment of the entire industry. TDAI’s objectives are to build a transparent and organized distribution services sector in India and maintain a healthy channel from the manufacturer to the end user through best uniform practices.
It will provide all industry stake holders a common ground for deliberating on regulatory issues that impact them, with a view to take those up with relevant authorities for resolution. TDAI will also facilitate interaction with various dealer associations on common issues faced by the distribution eco-system.

CT: In this first phase of formation, what is the road-map and key activities TDAI will be organizing?

Pillai: One of the key activities that TDAI are organizing over the next few months is to introduce ourselves, our plans and objectives to the IT trade community. We intend to have events in the four major zones of the country. In addition we are also corresponding with MAIT and other industry bodies.

CT: What support are you getting from your OEMs, what are the key issues your association will be taking up?

Pillai: Our Vendors have shown great support for TDAI as our objective will serve to benefit the entire eco system. TDAI is a great forum for discussion with vendors on taking the channel business to its next stage of development.

CT: Tell us about existing executive committee and its members, what would be the election process and annual meet.

PillaiLL: Jaishankar K, MD of Ingram Micro India Ltd is our Chairman, K.K. Choudhary, Director of Rashi Peripherals is our Secretary, Jayant Goradia, CEO of Savex Computers is our Treasurer. Induction to the board is by a regular nomination process as per the companies act and we will hold an AGM annually.

CT: Who all can be a part of these association members, what are the membership formalities and fee?

Pillai: All companies, in the distribution business in the field of Information technology can apply for membership to TDAI and the formalities are similar to other associations with the fee just to cover expenses.

CT: How would you ensure there will be no conflict between channel partners and local associations?

Pillai: You will appreciate that the channel partners and local associations are an integral part of the IT Distribution eco system. Our objectives are clear and there is no scope for conflict with either local associations or the channel partners as it is in everyone’s best interest to work together on common issues that affect all of us.

CT: Is there any plan to expand the membership?

Pillai: New Distributors are welcome to apply for Membership to TDAI. The applications would be processed and subject to Board approval.

CT: How would TDAI will be playing a significant role in the betterment of IT industry, channel and distribution?

Pillai: Our primary goal is to foster growth and development to create a prosperous technology distribution industry in India by creating a fraternity to support the industry on common issues i.e., statutory, legal, technical & product related and develop a mutually beneficial forum to maintain financial health throughout the chain. We would also work with everyone to create a system to enable sharing of information on inventory holding and consumption that monitors and highlights the overall health of the industry. And most importantly, work as a common voice with government to shape policy in all relevant areas which will automatically improve the entire industry.
