Mohali, May 30: Dell Corporation has reportedly shut down its international services center(BPO), which was opened and inaugurated by Michael Dell in the year 2005, in Mohali adjoining Chandigarh.
When contacted Dell India communication team said,”Dell India is yet to issue its official comment on this development.” Not only the 1000 employees at the Dell call center, but also the news has shocked the IT partners of Chandigarh and Mohali.
“Closing down of the call center was a shocking news to us as we were among the IT suppliers to the center, we have been working closely for last 10 years with Dell Call Center. Every year, I used to supply Rs 50 lakh of IT equipment’s at the call center. Certainly, the shutting down of the center is a big loss to us also,” said Varinder Phutela, owner of Phutela Computer Kingdom from Chandigarh.
He also added, “I did try to contact the senior official of the center to know the reason, however my call has not been answered back till today. I think it was a corporate decision to lean the strength of the center.”
Sanjiv Walia, president of Chandigarh IT association commented, “Today, the whole IT/ITes market is going through slowdown phase and at this juncture, it is becoming tough for large companies to remain profitable. In my view, more companies will be closing down their operation in the coming times.”
The sudden announcement by top company officials Wednesday night has rendered uncertain the future of nearly 1,000 staffers of the IT major. The company has asked its staffers to either opt for its facilities in Bangalore and Hyderabad or quit.
The Mohali center was providing services like consumer technology support and customer care for the US market.
The Punjab government has been closely working with the corporate sectors, and has been encouraging IT/ITes companies to set up their offices in the various parts of Punjab. This sudden move by Dell Corporation is certainly a setback for the Punjab government.
