New Initiative Against Fake Memories

Fake Memories

Unscrupulous vendors have for long been raking in the moolah by palming off memory modules made of fake chips to unsuspecting resellers and customers. However, now a new ray of hope has dawned on the Indian channel in tackling this long-standing problem.

p____p Distributors have finally decided to pick up the gauntlet and take the initiative to help curb the influx of fake memory modules by educating the resellers and buyers. This move has been warmly welcomed by the channel.

p____p During the last week, Mediaman and Supercom came out with guidelines providing clear direction on how to identify counterfeit goods. Although clearing the cobwebs is a mammoth task at hand, something that cannot be tackled overnight, the endeavors have nonetheless been widely appreciated.

p____p Laying emphasis on the rising problem of counterfeit DIMMs and memory chips, Kingmax has recently begun manufacturing colored dual inline memory modules (DIMMs), claiming the product to be fake-proof and “anti-imitation”. Apart from introducing color in memory module products, Kingmax is hopeful that the color trend will also start a new wave of characterization.

p____p Taking a cue from Kingmax, it would benefit the industry if all memory manufacturers launch a unified campaign to eradicate this menace.

p____p Memory vendors will need to do more than help spot fake memory modules, or better still, invest in manufacturing tamper-proof memory modules. Although vendors advise buyers as well as resellers to purchase from reputable sources rather than unknown dealers, the potential for fraud still looms large.

p____p Till further help can be sought from vendors, distributors would need to highlight/emphasize on its list authorized dealers for the benefit of the customers awareness. Since memory is a price-sensitive commodity, most unscrupulous dealers play on the price factor to dispose of fake goods. Hence the reseller should be wary of loosely-wrapped lower-priced modules and should avoid them completely.
