Bengaluru: GoDaddy is closing down Cloud Servers which it launched just last year for SMBs. It was a cloud computing business similar to that of AWS.
The new move of GoDaddy was initially reported by TechCrunch, later Raghu Murthi, SVP of hosting at GoDaddy, confirmed it in an official statement, saying:
“After serious consideration, we have decided to end-of-life our cloud servers’ product. Our goal from the beginning was to create simple and scalable services for small and medium business owners. We’re proud of what we built and now we are focusing on building robust and scalable solutions based on OpenStack infrastructure. GoDaddy Cloud Servers provided numerous learnings for us that we’ve already been applying to other products and services. Thanks to the partners and, most importantly, the customers who used it.”
The company indicated its plans of using the OpenStack software, but how it plans to go about is still unclear.
GoDaddy is also bullish about WordPress managed services and accelerating its channel partner program efforts.
GoDaddy has also announced that it will sell its PlusServer managed hosting business to a private equity firm for $456 million. Although the deal is pending regulatory approval, it should close in August.
The company has been open about its plans to sell the line of business, which it acquired as part of the Host Europe Group (HEG) acquisition that closed in April.
Both the move fell in line to support its strategy of pushing SMBs and application developers without competing cloud computing titian including AWS and Microsoft Azure.
The company’s acquisition of HEG for $1.79 billion extended its efforts into small business hosting across the globe.
